Mother 3’s battle system is really interesting. There’s the PSI moves, rolling health bars, and inventory management from Earthbound. But there’s the added mechanic of the rhythm system when attacking normally. Repeatedly pressing A alongside the beat of the battle song allows you to do additional damage in one turn, up to a maximum of 16 hits. Of course, this is not easy to do!

When I started my third playthrough of Mother 3, I decided I wanted to get all of the achievements for it on RetroAchievements (here’s my profile!). Interestingly, there’s a subset of achievements regarding getting 16-hit combos on every battle song without using the Hypno Pendulum. I’ve since completed all of the game’s normal achievements, and it’s become my goal to complete the second one too. This page records my progress in this journey!

Completed songs

Mr. Batty Twist

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: Mr. Batty

Character: Boney

Not a particularly difficult song. The tempo is a bit fast, but that's really it.

Dangerous Guys

Achieved on: August 31st, 2026

Enemy: Mrs. Lava

Character: Lucas

One of the easier songs. The tempo is pretty slow.

Troublesome Guys

Achieved on: August 26th, 2026

Enemy: Firefly

Character: Duster

This one's a bit weird because the heartbeat is a consistent 4/4 rhythm, whereas the beat that's audible in the song has a bit of swing to it. Still not too bad.

Back Beat Battle

Achieved on: August 26th, 2026

Enemy: Flying Mouse

Character: Duster

I don't think the heartbeat matches the audible rhythm in the song very well. However, the start of the loop is pretty easy to place, so it doesn't ultimately end up being the worst. Side note: This was the first song I got a 16-hit combo on!

Mischievous Blues

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: Big Spud Bug

Character: Duster

This one is very easy. Not too fast, not too slow, heartbeat matches up well enough with the audible rhythm... I got a 14 on my first try while listening to the song to write this post. The only tripping point is that there's a part where the tempo gets a bit faster for like five beats. But you can easily get your combo elsewhere in the song.

Tragic Reconstruction

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: Reconstructed Caribou

Character: Duster

Just like Mischievous Blues, this one is fairly easy. A good middling tempo, consistent 4/4 time signature, the works. There isn't even a tempo change in this one. Side note: what a melancholy tune!

More Mischievous Blues

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Upgraded Robot

Character: Boney

Weirdly, this song is easier than Mischievous Blues, despite the name suggesting otherwise. There's no speed-up 3/4ths of the way through the song. That explains why I got this two days before getting the other song. Side note: You kind of have to get good at this song in order to get the Ashes to Ashes, Soot to Soot achievement, because it requires you to defeat a Soot Dumpling, and the only real way to do enough damage to it before it blows away in the wind is to get high combos on it three turns in a row.

Cumbersome Guys

Achieved on: August 26th, 2026

Enemy: Walking Bushie

Character: Duster

Another easy combo. Good tempo, very consistent beat. It's also my favorite battle song in the game, so I was happy to listen to it over and over again. This was the second song I got a 16-hit combo on!

Mambo de Battle

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: Filthy Attack Roach

Character: Boney

This is another average combo. The song itself is a bit misleading, because the heartbeat is much simpler than you'd expect.

Astonishing March

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: Bro Team

Character: Boney

Another average song. The heartbeat is pretty intuitive from the song.

More Troublesome Guys

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Ancient Dragonfly

Character: Kumatora

Just like Troublesome Guys, but a bit faster, and it skips a beat halfway through and at the end. Both halves of the song have 32 beats in a row that are consistent, though, so it's not hard to avoid the skipped beats entirely. Side note: Got another 16-hit combo while listening to the heartbeat so I could write this post!

Toppling March

Achieved on: September 30th, 2026

Enemy: Tree

Character: Kumatora

This is the third most difficult song in the game! So many strange things are happening in here. There's weird gaps in the beat in the first part of the song, and there's spurts of tripled-up beats in the second half. There's a stretch of simple quarter notes toward the end, but the timing windows suddenly get very tight around there so you can't just use that to skip all of the other weird stuff.

I alternated between focusing on the different halves. Surviving the pauses is difficult because you have to get reacquainted very quickly, and also because the first beat after the pause is actually a little earlier than it sounds in the heartbeat. The tripled beats are tough in a similar-yet-opposite way; you have to be able to slow down to the correct speed very quickly. Overall, the challenges make this song really satisfying. It's probably one of the most fun ones here.

Fight with Mecha-Drago

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Mecha-Drago

Character: Lucas

This song is so sad! It's also a pretty average song to combo; it's just a bit on the faster side. As far as I can tell, it's completely consistent the whole way through, although it's hard to know for sure since you can't put the Mecha-Drago to sleep and thus can't listen to the heartbeat.

Zombeat

Achieved on: September 13th, 2026

Enemy: Zombie Man

Character: Duster

Another average song. Its name strikes fear into the heart, however, as I'll explain later.

Fate

Achieved on: August 31st, 2026

Enemy: Zombie Dog

Character: Lucas

This is actually one of the harder songs in the game; probably top 10, depending on how you look at it. It's fairly fast, and it does not have a consistent quarter note rhythm. Using Q to represent a quarter note and E to represent an eighth note, it goes Q-Q- EEQ- EEEQ -EQ-. Like this:

While the tempo is fast and the rhythm is complicated, the beat is also very audible in the song, so you are unlikely to get lost. I like this song a lot, so I focused on it early on, and it ended up being the 10th combo I got (with the 9th being the alternate version of the song, Serious). Getting such a difficult combo early on is part of what made me feel like there was a possibility I could go the whole distance!

Accelerondo

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Osohe Cape

Character: Duster

This song is very cool because, as the name suggests, it slowly speeds up as the song progresses. You've got to be able to react to this and speed up your button presses accordingly! Despite this, it's still very manageable, because the rhythm is quarter notes the whole way.

More Cumbersome Guys

Achieved on: August 26th, 2026

Enemy: Pseudoor

Character: Duster

The return of Cumbersome Guys, my beloved! It does the typical beat-skipping thing that a lot of these "advanced version" songs do, but it's still not very difficult.

More Dangerous Guys

Achieved on: August 26th, 2026

Enemy: Stinky Ghost

Character: Duster

While Dangerous Guys was one of the easiest songs in the game, this version of it really steps things up. The tempo changes frequently, and it does not loop the same way the original song did. However, there's also a good stretch of notes in the middle that are at a consistent tempo and rhythm.

And El Mariachi

Achieved on: September 27th, 2026

Enemy: Cactus Wolf

Character: Kumatora

This song is not difficult, and it's strange that it took me so long to get it. It's possible I just forgot to do it, considering the fact that I got the advanced version of it much earlier.

Dry Guys

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Li'l Big Bro

Character: Kumatora

One of the harder songs. The rhythm is like two half notes, followed by a half note triplet. It's like having to switch between two tempos every measure. The song is fairly slow, though, and the beat is very audible throughout.

Etude for Ghosts

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Artsy Ghost

Character: Lucas

Musically, this song is all over the place. The rhythm is not really audible at all when the enemy's not asleep, which makes it seem daunting. However, its saving grace is that the tempo is quite slow, and it's entirely quarter notes.

Mambo de Battle Plus

Achieved on: September 27th, 2026

Enemy: Rooound Fish

Character: Duster

This one has some stumbling points scattered throughout. My strategy was just to try to get my combo at the very beginning of the song, when there's a long stretch of quarter notes. It's not the easiest, because like half of that stretch doesn't have a very audible beat.

Serious

Achieved on: August 31st, 2026

Enemy: Einswine

Character: Duster

This is the "advanced version" of Fate, but strangely enough, it has the exact same heartbeat! The tempo is the same, the rhythm is the same, and it's just as audible in the track. The music has a bit more of a flourish than the original song, but in terms of gameplay it's exactly the same. That does, however, make it one of the hardest combos in the game.

Unfounded Revenge

Achieved on: August 30th, 2026

Enemy: Fierce Pork Trooper

Character: Salsa

Another of my favorite battle songs! It's also not too difficult; a bit fast, but consistent.

Family Matters: 2nd Movement

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Mr. Passion

Character: Kumatora

This combines a bunch of famous classical songs, and as a result sounds kind of all over the place, similar to Etude for Ghosts. Just like that song, though, this has a consistent quarter note rhythm and is on the slower side.

Piggy Guys

Achieved on: September 27th, 2026

Enemy: King Statue

Character: Kumatora

In my opinion, this is the second hardest combo in the game. And why? The tempo might be a little fast, but it never changes, and the entire rhythm is quarter notes. The problem is that the timing windows on these quarter notes is, for some reason, extremely narrow in some cases. You can be comboing nicely on rhythm and just randomly lose it for seemingly no reason. I practiced this song nearly every day for weeks. Luckily, I like the song, so I didn't get tired of listening to it. Then, one morning, which I'm calling my "Godmode Morning", I just. Got it. This was shortly after getting one of the other top-5 hardest songs, too, so it was a pretty great feeling.

Piggy Something

Achieved on: August 30th, 2026

Enemy: Surprise Box

Character: Lucas

This is supposed to be the "advanced version" of Piggy Guys, but it's significantly easier because the timing windows on the beats are much more normal. It has some kind of random tempo changes, and a couple of extra beats, but it really just pales in comparison to the original song.

Ode to Ancestors: 8th Movement

Achieved on: September 28th, 2026

Enemy: Lord Passion

Character: Kumatora

Very strange song, but not really in an enjoyable way like Toppling March. Luckily this was a lot easier.

Formidable Foe

Achieved on: September 27th, 2026

Enemy: Oh-So-Snake

Character: Boney

Despite being a boss theme, the song itself is not much of a formidable foe. The beat is consistent, and follows fairly intuitively from the song. I'm not sure why this intimidated me for so long; once I actually got into trying it, it didn't take too long. Then again, it was the Godmode Morning.

Audacious March

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: K9000

Character: Kumatora

An average song.

Stringendo

Achieved on: September 2nd, 2026

Enemy: Cuddle Bomb

Character: Boney

This is the "advanced version" of Accelerondo, but it's actually somewhat easier because it's slower.

Intense Guys

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Rhinocerocket

Character: Kumatora

It's a little fast, but not really that bad. The main confusing thing is that the heartbeat tempo stays high even in the more subdued half of the song.

A 16-Beat Attack!

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Beaten Drum

Character: Boney

Interestingly, this is one of two battle songs that are permanently missable. No enemy uses this song by default -- it only plays if Beaten Drum uses a specific move, and enemies can't use moves in the Battle Memory. I copied my save file when I got to the Jealous Bass and then just played on the other save until the very end, I guess because I didn't believe in myself enough to combo those songs at the time.

A Marching Attack!

Achieved on: September 6th, 2026

Enemy: Beaten Drum

Character: Boney

This is the other missable battle song!

Rock and Roll (Mild)

Achieved on: September 9th, 2026

Enemy: Gently Weeping Guitar

Character: Boney

A little fast, but pretty average.

Wasteful Anthem

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Forlorn Junk Heap

Character: Duster

Another average song. I like this one a good amount. You might recognize it from Super Smash Bros.

MROB-6720M

Achieved on: September 25th, 2026

Enemy: Li'l Miss Marshmallow

Character: Boney

While this song does have a consistent rhythm, the tempo is quite fast, which makes it difficult to keep up with it. The beat is also much less audible in the second half of the song.

And Yet, El Mariachi

Achieved on: September 8th, 2026

Enemy: Cleocatra

Character: Duster

This is the harder version of And El Mariachi, but it's really not that much harder. It just has a couple of brief tempo changes that weren't in the original song.

More Audacious March

Achieved on: September 13th, 2026

Enemy: Pigmask Major

Character: Duster

Once again, a typical "harder version" of a song, this time Audacious March.

Smashing Song of Praise

Achieved on: September 13th, 2026

Enemy: Mecha-Lion

Character: Lucas

The harder version of Wasteful Anthem.

Hustle for Pride

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Miracle Fassad

Character: Duster

This is the harder version of Unfounded Revenge, and it remains a great song. A little tricky, but not bad.

Strong One

Achieved on: September 24th, 2026

Enemy: Barrier Trio

Character: Kumatora

Now there's an iconic song. If you're familiar with the Mother 3 battle system, you've probably heard the rumor that this song's time signature is 15/8 (and that the Masked Man variant is in the even more ridiculous 29/16). As far as I can tell, neither of these are true. There's a video by Cadence Hira aptly named Everyone was wrong about the Strong One (Masked Man) Time Signature that goes into this, but essentially all of the songs in the game are 4/4 and just employ tempo switching to emulate more complex patterns. To be honest, I'm not sure why the time signature even matters when it comes to getting a 16-hit combo, but I get that it's a fun rumor anyway.

While the time signature thing might not be real, the song is still one of the hardest in the game. The heartbeat mostly follows the very prominent audible rhythm: 3 slower beats, 4 quick beats, 1 beat after a quick pause, and then a longer pause before the loop. The confusing part is the pause at the end of each loop, because the song makes it sound like there are more beats, but you actually just have to pause. Because of this, the main difficulty comes from surviving from one loop to the next. The rhythm also becomes inaudible during a section at the end of the song, and when I get up to that, I usually just wait for the song to restart, because I kind of need the three drum beats as an anchor.

I also gotta say that I love this song. I listened to it a lot while working on the combo, and it's just such a strange melody. Mother 3 is awesome.

Strong One (Masked Man)

Achieved on: September 23rd, 2026

Enemy: Masked Man

Character: Lucas 😢

Of course, this is the harder version of Strong One. I actually got it a day earlier than the original song, though. The strange speed-ups you can hear in the song are not actually reflected in the heartbeat. The only real gameplay difference between the songs is that this one is faster, which I think strangely may have made it a bit easier.

Even More Intense Guys

Achieved on: September 3rd, 2026

Enemy: Rhinocerocket Mark II

Character: Kumatora

The harder version of Intense Guys. Not much to say about it.

Natural Killer Cyborg

Achieved on: September 7th, 2026

Enemy: Natural Killer Cyborg

Character: Kumatora

I, strangely, did not really struggle with this song. It has multiple tempo changes, but they're long-lasting changes, not just quick bursts. The rhythm is fairly intuitive, and you just have to make sure you can react to the tempo changes.

Porky's Porkies

Achieved on: September 5th, 2026

Enemy: PORKY 01

Character: Boney

You can't not love this song. So chiptune-y! It's not incredibly difficult, and I almost got it a couple of times during the actual Mecha-Porkies fight, but the dang bots kept exploding! Ain't that just the way.

Master Porky's Theme

Achieved on: September 7th, 2026

Enemy: Porky

Character: Duster

This is another song that's not quite as difficult as you'd expect, especially considering that it's the penultimate boss's theme.

Absolutely Safe Capsule

Achieved on: September 27th, 2026

Enemy: Porky

Character: Lucas

It's weird that you can fight this in the Battle Memory at all, but okay. I would consider this the 5th hardest combo in the game. Why? The rhythm is completely inaudible. There's nothing even resembling a beat in the track. Combined with the approximately 120bpm tempo, it is hard to start a combo and stay on it. The strategy I used (which was recommended in the RetroAchievements comments) was to mute the game and listen to this Persona 3 song instead. You have to pause and unpause your emulator a bunch to get the track to line up properly, and it does seem like it'll drift out of sync with the game after a while, but hey, the results don't lie.

Fun stats

While tabulating all of this data, I started wondering which character got the most 16-hit combos. Well, here’s the results (so far)!

  1. Duster: 16
  2. Kumatora: 12
  3. Boney: 11
  4. Lucas: 8
  5. Salsa: 1

Duster did really well here! I think this is probably because you get the Battle Memory in Chapter 2, and I went and attempted to combo a bunch of songs right away, at a time when Duster was my only party member. Poor Lucas did the worst out of the main four. I’m amused to see that Salsa made his mark too, in the limited amount of time that he was around.

Incomplete songs

Here’s a list of the songs I have yet to get a 16-hit combo on:

  • Bothersome Guys
  • Tough Zombeat
  • Back Beat Battle - Hard
  • Even Drier Guys
  • Rock and Roll (Spicy)
  • GENE163-1425
  • Tragic Security

Some of these are here because they’re hard and some are just because I haven’t really given them a solid attempt yet.

Now, throughout this page, I’ve mentioned difficulty rankings for some of the songs. Here’s my definitive ranking of what I would consider the five most difficult songs in Mother 3 (with the ones I’ve gotten struck out):

  1. Absolutely Safe Capsule: There's a consistent tempo and rhythm, but the beat is completely inaudible in the song, which makes it very hard to get on it and stay on it.
  2. Tough Zombeat: This song is fast and has a doubled-up beat somewhere in the loop. The worst part though is that the heartbeat track is inaccurate, so you can't even really practice with the Hypno Pendulum.
  3. Toppling March: So many strange things are happening in here. There's weird gaps in the beat in the first part of the song, and there's spurts of tripled-up beats in the second half.
  4. Piggy Guys: Once again, there's a consistent tempo and rhythm. The problem here is that the timing windows on the beats are weirdly tight. You'll just randomly lose your combo for seemingly no reason.
  5. Bothersome Guys: Yes, the Mole Cricket song. The first battle song in the entire game is the hardest to get a 16-hit combo on. It's a similar issue to Piggy Guys; the timing windows are just ridiculously tight. They're so tight that it almost seems like a glitch. No one on RetroAchievements has gotten this combo without savestates in a literal year (as of writing this).
